The other day I sat and spoke with Pops, about a striking revelation I had. One that is a bit ironic. Wisdom tells us that it’s better to understand than it is to be understood. This is a much more difficult task than it seems. Nonetheless, I was walking to the store trying to gain some understanding about life in general. On my way, I saw a bat flying. It circled me a few times and as it did it spoke to me. As many know, bats have very poor vision, thus they use sonar to locate things. In fact, they can do it with incredible accuracy allowing them to even catch bugs mid-flight. So, in essence, they get an understanding from of their world through hearing; it’s how they “see”.
Therein is where my revelation came. We often talk to one another and use the phrase “I see” which clearly means “I understand”. However, it is through listening, our ears, that we gain most of our understanding. So we can thus conclude that in actuality, we must use our ears to see.
